Fundamental Clinic

Bikeskills NC designed the Fundamental Skills Clinic to teach you the core skills you will need to safely navigate the most common obstacles encountered on today’s mountain bike trails. In the fundamental clinic, we cover body position on the bike and how it changes with the terrain, operating the controls you find on your handlebars, and maintaining awareness of the terrain. Riders of all experience levels can benefit from the fundamental skills clinic regardless of how long they have been riding. Below is an example lesson plan for the Fundamental Skills Clinic:

I. Bike check – Fit, ergonomics, and general safety

II. Rules /Trail Etiquette

III. Body Position/Balance – Descending, climbing, cornering, navigating obstacles

IV. Operation of Controls – Brake levers, shifter levers, and dropper post

V. Terrain Awareness

Progression Clinic

We designed the Progression Clinic to expand on the skills you gained in the Fundamental Skills Clinic. In the progression clinic, you will learn how to combine skills to maneuver your bike over and around trail obstacles. Riders of all levels can benefit from the Progression Clinic, but we use the fundamental skills as the basis of instruction. We recommend that you take the Fundamental Clinic before the Progression Clinic. Below is an example lesson plan for the Progression Clinic:

I.  Bike check – Fit, ergonomics, and general safety

II.  Rules /Trail Etiquette

III.  Direction Control – Cornering and maintaining a line

IV.  Maneuvers – Front and rear wheel lifts
